Why Does Our Skin Age Anyways?
The skin has two layers the dermis (the underlying layer) and the epidermis (the outer layer).
The dermis is made out of collagen and elastic fibers that are responsible for its toughness and elasticity as well as attracting and binding water which keeps the skin hydrated. When you are young the elastic fibers found in the dermis is what keeps it elastic and smooth but as we age we loose these fibers as well as subcutaneous fat which results in wrinkles and sagging.
How long does the skin take to renew itself?
The epidermis consists of 20-30 cell layers and it rubs and flakes off steadily and is replaced with new cells. You have a total new epidermis every 25-45 days. This is why changes in your diet will usually take around 25-45 days to show up.
How We Damage Our Skin.
Most visible changes occur to our skin because of abrasion, chemicals, wind, pollutants and bacteria that clogs the pores. Furthermore, there is also the amount of collagen fibers and the production of natural oils that decreases with old age. Thus, your skin thins, it gets dry, and it is more susceptible to bruising.
